Running Man ep 206 – DIY Cooking Battle
The cast splits into three teams to play some games and compete in a cook-off.
Planning and Direction: 4
While some of the mini-games were actually pretty fun (particularly the toaster game), half of the episode was cooking which is usually not the greatest in terms of variety entertainment value. That being said, as far as cooking specials go, this wasn’t too bad since the staff tried to make more of a game out of it this time around. Still, doing a cooking episode at all is pretty lazy in terms of ideas.
Generally good visuals, with crisp captions and lots of helpful graphics and split-screen edits to narrate the story during the games segment. Music wasn’t bad, but definitely nothing special either.
Dan Croll – From Nowhere
Yo Yo Ma & Bobby McFerrin – Hush Little Baby
Antonio Banderas & Los Lobos – Cancion Del Mariachi
Nat King Cole – Love
Turbo – White Love
Yoo Jae Suk: 7
Another strong performance from Jae Suk, who led the way from beginning to end. Worked well with Kwang Soo and Joo Won, and added plenty of gags of his own including an absurd spit-take, and sabotaging his own team’s food for entertainment value. He used his ‘brat’ character to good effect.
Kim Jong Kook: 4
Not much to say here, not terrible but a bit boring, and didn’t really find his character rhythm this week.
Ha Ha: 4
Seemed up for the shoot early on, but got stuck with Jong Kook who wasn’t doing much and Seok Chun who didn’t really want to have much to do with HaHa. Had a few OK comments but not much else.
Ji Suk Jin: 5
Decent episode for Suk Jin, who acted basically as MC of his team and did fine, but nothing too memorable.
Lee Kwang Soo: 6
Worked well with Jae Suk as usual and didn’t overreach himself too much, which led to a good solid variety performance.
Gary was pretty good, hamming it up during the mini-games as he sarcastically went along with the Monday Couple gags. Pretty quiet during the cooking, though.
Song Ji Hyo: 4
Seemed more energetic than usual during the opening games, but still didn’t really -do- anything, mostly just reacting to Gary and Suk Jin.
Hong Seok Chun, Joo Won
Both of the guests were pretty solid overall, as Joo Won was quiet but up for the games, and Seok Chun had a few decent comments here and there. Both are decent as guests, so it feels like a bit of waste to use them on a cooking episode.
Episode MVP: Yoo Jae Suk
Led the charge from beginning to end this week. Nothing out of this world, but he was the funniest member from the introduction to the final judging, and also worked hard to include others in his gags.
Final Score: 4
As cooking episodes go, this wasn’t terrible, but the episode might have benefited from less of cooking itself being aired since not much happened there. The episode wasn’t a wreck or anything, but could easily be skipped without the viewer missing much.
